For the past 17 years, Pantone, the design world’s leading color authority chooses a color projecting current cultural trends. Throughout the preceding year, color design professionals attend workshops to tell stories about their proposed color choices. Politics, pop culture, film, art, sports, technology and social issues are often influencers. After an intricate process of selection, a color is chosen as the “direction” for the coming year.
Besides print, the color has been known to pop up in paint, textiles, fashion, furniture, kitchen appliances and even make-up! Greenery, the color for 2017 is inspired by nature and new beginnings. Healthy food resolutions and growing vegetarian/organic trends; vegetation and the outdoors during spring and summer, evoke freshness, environmental consciousness and all around positivity.
Although many of us lead technology infused lives, there remains the yearning to return to Nature and basics. Ultimately, Greenery calls to mind the ‘re-’ words: refresh, revive, restore, renew, replenish, regenerate, rejuvenate, reinvigorate, re-oxygenate.
Different from 2010’s Color of the Year, Emerald which was a “green with envy” hue, Greenery has more of a yellow cast, reminiscent of the sun, an uplifting and symbolic light that people look to in complicated times. Think afternoon walks to clear our head, or vacations to recharge and rejuvenate.
With Greenery leading the way and influencing 2017, how can this not be a year of promise, rejuvenation, and new beginnings?!
